Food is any material consumed to supply nutrition to an organism for future growth. A wide range of food is available in the market. Grains, pulses, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, legumes and oils are some common food types. Food plays a major role in shaping up a person’s health condition. Due to innumerable activities, people get fatigued easily. A healthy and well-maintained body is the key to enjoy optimum health condition.

Food provides your body with the exact amount of nutrients that it requires. Food is generally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and has vital nutrients, like proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, etc. Food has a lot of benefits, but sometimes it also has its disadvantages. Some foods can be very harmful for your health, if taken in excess quantities. These unhealthy food substances contain excess calories, sugar, cholesterol and fat, which lead to obesity. Obesity causes several other related diseases and disorders, including cardio-vascular disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, colon cancer, and kidney stones.

We get nourishment from four sources: animal flesh, plant material (through food), water and mineral soil. Animal flesh and plant material cannot be properly digested without the help of digestive enzymes. Water and mineral soils are important for ensuring correct nutrition. So, it is imperative to eat a well-balanced and healthy diet, which fulfills all of our nourishment needs. If you take in excess of nutrients from just a single food type, you may suffer from various complications.

There are three common food-related diseases: vitamin deficiency, mineral deficiency, and vitamin toxicity. Vitamin deficiency can result in undernourishment and deficiency diseases (eg. beriberi and ulcerative colitis). Vitamin toxicity can result in hypervitaminosis and severe anemia. There are certain medications that cause vitamin deficiency, so it is advisable to check with your doctor before taking certain medications.

Plants, animals and micro-organisms all have their own unique sets of nutrients, which are separated in amounts that are necessary for growth, development and maintenance. The human body requires around 700 calories of energy to operate properly. This number is widely known as the recommended daily allowance of nutrients. Animal origin foods contain less fat, more carbohydrates and protein, making them a much better choice for a balanced diet.

Carbohydrates are the main source of energy and they provide many of the carbohydrates we need to live. However, too much carbohydrate consumption can cause spikes in blood sugar levels, resulting in obesity and other metabolic disorders. Sugar is another form of carbohydrates, which provides many of the benefits of carbohydrates. Therefore, it is important to choose a carbohydrate rich food and eat foods that are low in both carbohydrates and sugar to maintain a healthy balance of blood sugar levels.
